MNTL Magnetic Tile – Age, Safety & Compatibility Guide

MNTL Magnetic Tile – Age, Safety & Compatibility Guide

This guide covers everything you need to know before choosing an MNTL magnetic tile set for your child — from the right age to start, to how our tiles are built, tested, and designed to work alongside other popular magnetic tile brands.

Recommended Age

MNTL magnetic tile sets are designed for children aged 3 years and above. The tiles feature smooth, rounded edges and a secure riveted frame, making them suitable for independent play and guided builds from preschool age onwards.

As with all small-part toys, we recommend adult supervision for children at the younger end of the age range. MNTL sets are not suitable for children under 3 years of age due to small magnetic components.

Construction: Riveted Frame Design

Each MNTL tile is built with a riveted construction — the frame panels are secured together with rivets rather than simple snap-fits or adhesive. This reinforcement helps the tiles withstand repeated use and the rigours of active, creative play.

Key construction features include:

  • Durable ABS plastic shell with riveted frame joints
  • Strong internal magnets enclosed within the frame
  • Smooth, rounded edges designed with child safety in mind
  • Translucent coloured panels that allow light to pass through for additional play possibilities

Safety Testing

MNTL magnetic tiles are tested to internationally recognised safety standards:

  • EN71 – The European toy safety standard, covering mechanical and physical properties, flammability, and chemical properties.
  • ASTM F963 – The American standard for toy safety, addressing physical, mechanical, flammability, and chemical requirements for toys sold in the United States market.

These certifications confirm that MNTL tiles have been evaluated against established benchmarks for children's toy safety. For full certification documentation, please contact us directly.

Compatibility with Other Magnetic Tile Brands

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive is whether MNTL tiles work with tiles from other brands. MNTL tiles use a standard magnetic tile sizing and magnet polarity that is compatible with several popular brands, including:

  • Playmag – MNTL tiles connect seamlessly with Playmag sets, allowing you to combine pieces from both ranges.
  • Connetix – MNTL tiles are compatible with Connetix magnetic tiles, so existing Connetix collections can be extended with MNTL sets.
  • Magna-Tiles – MNTL tiles are also compatible with Magna-Tiles, one of the most widely used magnetic tile systems globally.

Compatibility means that magnets on MNTL tiles will connect to magnets on tiles from these brands, allowing children to build structures mixing pieces from multiple sets. Minor size or colour variations between brands are normal and do not affect connectivity.

Note: While magnetic connectivity is compatible, Play Wonders cannot guarantee compatibility with every product line or future releases from third-party brands. We recommend testing a small combination before mixing full sets.

Choosing the Right Set

Frequently Asked Questions

Are MNTL tiles safe if a child chews on them?

MNTL tiles are made from non-toxic ABS plastic and have passed EN71 and ASTM chemical safety requirements. However, they are not designed to be chewed or mouthed, and the tiles contain internal magnets. Always supervise young children during play.

Can I mix MNTL tiles with tiles we already own from another brand?

Yes — MNTL tiles are compatible with Playmag, Connetix, and Magna-Tiles. Magnets will connect across brands, though there may be small cosmetic differences in panel size or shade.

How do I clean MNTL tiles?

Wipe tiles with a damp cloth. Do not submerge in water or expose to prolonged moisture, as this may affect the internal magnets and frame integrity.
